Saturday PM.

My dear Sweetheart,

All this week I have thought that I would be able to return to Atlanta right-a-way, but the job of getting the work program cooperative statement for states and a thousand other things have prevented it. This noon I gave the information in typed form to Mr. Rohner and I hope that I can get away Monday PM. If so, I’ll be in Atlanta Tuesday noon. After a few days of organization work in Georgia and a conference with Bruce and Roberts I’ll have to return here. As a matter of fact, Mr. Rohner says that I’ll have a lot of travel between Washington and the field until things are going. The job is not easy but I’ll have a lot of experienced men to assist me this time. I have not been officially informed, but I learn that the job is to be set up on a pay with other division chiefs at $5200 or $5600, I do not know which pay. At present it is the same $4200.

Headquarters are to be at San Antonio Texas and I guess you will not mind that, except for our house and furniture at Savannah. Think you would want to stay at Savannah until after school closes when we should have an office set up at San Antonio.

Not many men to be used this year, but a variety in the program. More instruction necessary and more supervision & more responsibility. I am to have full charge but that means under Mr. Strong.

The telegram from Ethel shocked me and I hope Marshall is OK to. Did you get word to Frank? I am sure that they had a comfortable place in a neighbor’s home until they could get a place. Ethel & Marshall are known by all there and I am sure that they are well liked. It is a shame to suffer the loss, but I feel that Marshall had some insurance. Too, his bonus should help out some.

I have been stopping at the Hotel Cushing and in spite of their protests I think I can pay them OK. I drew $25 from our account since I left, asked Ethel to draw $100, will need about $30 for Cushings Monday. If our check went from Atlanta, deposit it. If not, there is plenty to take care of everything. I have not given the $100 to the New England for annuity yet and will wait until we can check up at Savannah.

Will ask R.A. to meet me at Savannah for a conference, after I get all of the state supervisors together at Atlanta. I plan to use him as my right hand man if agreeable to him.

Excuse me for running away after I got to Atlanta, but I think it is to our mutual advantage.

With lots & lots of love to the three of you.

Your
Walter.

My dear Sweetheart,

I wired the news by night letter and there is very little more to tell now. I am to have full charge under Strong’s office, which means not full charge, but as near full charge as any one else in Bureau. Right now I am busy trying to make set ups and detailed plans for work of next season. This to be done before the Cooperative Statement for States can be prepared. It means I’ll be here several days this time. (Will mail Income tax blank & check to Savannah). I am told by Cushing Bishopp & Rohner that the temporary nature of the S.W. program does not mean that I’ll not have a place when this is over. A place will be held open for me. Rohner insists that I have nothing to worry about on that score.

Do not know if we will have two administrative offices in field as planned or only one. Atlanta is undoubtedly too far east for a single office. Seems that Texas would be better, since program includes California. More about this later.

Bishopps were very cordial to me tonight and had a wonderful dinner. I am sure that he feels hurt. I intend to be so d. nice and cooperative, because I will not be subject to his many suggestions! I am writing Mr. Townsend & John but I certainly want the present kept secret. It is not known about Washington, even in B’s office. Parman and Babcock are to return to research. Roberts and Bruce are to be with me. All other state men etc. to be with me.

The music goes round and round but it is not coming out here very much.

There are a number of things to be discussed & all plans to be made.

With all my love, Honey,

Your
Walter

My dear Sweetheart,

I am encouraged over the report on Walter White and I believe that he is on the way to recovery. Regret very much that I could not stay over in Savannah until he was completely over the Flu. It is pretty hard on you to have two youngsters needing attention all of the time. I am glad we did not have two sets of twins or two sets of quintuplets.

We are figuring out our program costs with the remainder of our money for the balance of the year. This has to be approved in Washington by the budget office.

Cushing left last night and should be in Washington now. He is pretty familiar with the whole program and is in better shape to take care of our needs. Bish is expected in the S.E. during this month, perhaps about the 15th. Stiles is with us yet and is a problem.

With love to all of you & hoping to see you soon,

Your
Walter.

Sunday PM.

My dear Ina,

Mr. Cushing and I are to leave here tomorrow for Tifton, Valdosta, Gainesville, Orlando Woodbine & return to Savannah about next Sunday. I cannot be sure of the date of arrival at Savannah but will let you know from Gainesville. Regret that I cannot be at home with you for Thanksgiving. According to our trip we should get to Gainesville about that time. No invitation there for dinner.

Mr. Strong spent only an hour or two and then left for other Bureau offices here & then for the Rio Grande Valley.

Mr. Cushing says that he left Deriza feeling just fine & to hug our Babies for her. Mr. Cushing will come to Savannah with me about next Sunday.

With love,

Your
Walter.

Tell Walter White hello for me.

Atlanta, Ga.
Thurs. Nov. 21, 1935.

My dear Sweetheart,

I am at Mr. Townsend’s apartment and the paper was kindly furnished by him. Every evening has been spent with him and at the present time we are listening to Amos & Andy. Tonight we went to a movie, a Monte Carlo picture also Mrs. Laake’s niece, Dorothy Dare in a technicolor picture. A Western ranch with color scenes of the Grand Canyon, Bridal Veil Falls & others. She plays the leading feminine role. Has red hair with green dress.

Sunday night at Valdosta Laake and I visited until 11 PM and again the AM of Monday. Said he filled a date after he left me Sunday night. I forgot that he might have a date and did not think to inquire. Saw Mr. Yeomans yesterday AM. He ran a color movie on the potato weevil for me. He is in Valdosta now but will be back for Saturday morning. I am expecting Mr. Strong then and I have invited Roberts to come up for the conference. Dr. Bishopp is in Dallas today and should be back in Washington Saturday.

Following my report on Dr. Stiles, Cushing wired that if we could not find a place for him we should terminate his appointment. Mr. Brundrett agreed to take him, but today Cushing advised that I would have to describe the job as one Brundrett could not take care of by his present personnel and that such a transfer would have to be a demotion for Dr. Stiles. He suggested no arrangements until Bishopp returns to Washington. This sounds like Cushing talked it over with Rohner. Cushing is supporting me on my name “the true screw worm” since it is already in use & the name “primary screw worm fly” has not become established.

Plenty of letters had accumulated on my desk, but today I dictated answers for most of them. They should go out tomorrow.

Roberts and Prince are going to Mississippi for Thanksgiving and at the same time Mr. Hull plans to be in Mississippi. Roberts suggested that if I went to Savannah, Miss Fulcher could come home for Friday & Sat. and could write any letters for me during that time. This sounds OK, so with your consent I’ll plan to come home about Wednesday night. Put my name in the pot for Thanksgiving dinner. Ask Dorothy if she can make some of those good biscuits. I have the snake jumping racer [?] for Walter White and I hope he will be a good boy. Also, I have a keen little truck for him to show the neighbor kids. Excuse the ink, him quit. With love to the three of you.

Your
Walter.

Bartow Fla. Thurs. Noon.

We have had about eight meetings and by Sat. night probably about 15. As far as I can tell it will be Sunday PM before I can reach Savannah. If important will go to Atlanta, otherwise will come home. Meetings small but good. Tell Walter White to be a good boy.

Walter.

My dear Ina,

Last night I mailed the salary check of the 15th to the C&S bank for deposit. I had received a notice from the bank. The insurance notice you mentioned is in my bag. I guess I did not tell you about burying it away. It is on the Dallas policy and continues in force as long as we have a value left in it.

I am leaving this PM for Tifton tonight. Will meet Bruce at Elkton Fla. for a farmers meeting at 8 PM tomorrow night. At Gainesville Fla. Friday and Saturday for County agent meeting & meeting of district men of Fla. I should reach Savannah some time Sunday, probably in afternoon. Do not plan a dinner for me at noon.

With lots of love to Walter White, Lewis Dunbar & my wife.

Walter.

Stationery from the Edwards Hotel, Jackson, Miss.

Oct. 18, 1935.

My dear Ina,

Dr. Cain and I arrived here as per schedule at 2 PM today and following the conference we have had discussions with Parman, Mr. Maloney, Brunson and Hollingsworth. This conference like that of last Friday was not productive but it looks as though some livestock meetings might get started in about another month. Things move slowly in Miss. Mr. Parman will return to Uvalde sometime next week and after this trip he will remain there most of the time. He will supervise for Miss. & La. but will not be away from Uvalde very much. It is not satisfactory to discuss the work with him. He thinks that all of us are wrong and that there is only one species, but also that he always knew that there were two species. His talk with the conference was a long drawn out one in rather vague terms but not critical of the force.

October 18, 1935

I spent Sunday (Sat. night to Mon. AM) with Mother Dove at the farm (Sat. night at Roxie). They appreciate the waffle iron. Both of the colts are just fine and Walter White’s is gentle. Lewis Dunbar’s is about the color of a mouse and she does not like for anyone to touch her. All of the folks and the horses are OK. Uncle Revah is not as strong as usual but looks OK. Mother looks better than she has in several years. We did not discuss the well though Revah and I looked at it.

Monday noon Dr. Cain & I reached Baton Rouge. While I had a conference he visited at L.S.U. We drove to Crosley La. and spent the night. Tuesday noon we saw the Brundretts and ate lunch with the Dowards. Mrs. Brundrett has a lot of gray hair, had some one washing clothes, no lunch prepared, and she didn’t seem to have thoughts quick enough to ask us to do something for her. We did not stay long. The baby, a little girl, is beautiful. Long blonde curls and brown eyes. The Dowards had a lunch which was very fine. I like them very much. Brundrett made up three more exhibits and they have four going. I like the work there first rate. Tuesday about 5PM Dr. Cain & I started for the College. We spent the night at Houston in a camp where you and I stopped. Wed. AM we met M.C. McGehee at his office. He has made a fortune in foreign oil contracts during the past five years. We arrived at the college about noon and spent the night there at a hotel on the campus. Had dinner with Prof. Bilsing while Dr. Cain visited with the vets. Thurs. AM we drove to Dallas and got there about noon. We left Dallas at 4 PM. Saw the Chamberlains & the house. Jackie is a beautiful little girl with an olive complexion and curly hair. The house looks mighty good but needs some paper work and a little work on the foundation. The two peach trees had about 15 bushels of peaches this year. Laake was not at the Lab but we saw Melvin, Mr. Somier & the new men & steno. The lab was cleaned up pretty well but with evidences of older days in evidence. We drove by SMU. Thursday night we drove by about 12 1/2 miles of hamburger stands in the oil well section about Longview & arrived at Minden La. at 12:30 this A.M. We met Mr. W.E. Dee who I knew at A&M. Dr. Cain wanted to see him & I think they visited all night. We left Minden at 8 this AM. Tonight Dr. Cain is visiting an uncle here at Jackson. I may drive by Ethel’s tomorrow on my way to Atlanta. I may take Dr. Cain & Mr. Maloney by the college. I should reach Atlanta Monday. Bruce has a meeting on the 24th and it looks like I should go there from Atlanta before coming to Savannah. I am to talk to the county agents meeting also to Bruce’s men on the 26th.

I love you lots and lots Honey and I hope to see you before long.

Your
Walter.

Thanks for your letter which Mr. Townsend forwarded here.
