My dear Sweetheart,

I am enclosing the annuity contract with a receipt of the Mass. Mutual that monthly payments to July 20 are charged to the loan. The difference between $1500 & $1790.01 equals the $50 monthly payments less interest. Payments made between now and July 20 apply on the principal. I am enclosing a yellow envelope which gives the agent’s address at Savannah (H H Wilson). I think we should send $100 per month and mark the checks Reduction of Loan on A2620.

The papering is being done at the Dallas house this month and the check from Mr. Chamberlain will be a small one. The check for the 1st payment on the Savannah house was to have been made to you by Mr. George McDonnel so you could deposit it. By this time you have received it, no doubt. I am enclosing the cancellation by Mrs. Nellie Adams which should be kept with our deed in the safety box. Could you replace them in the box also put the Kehoe notes in there for protection.

Enclosed are two old receipts from the Mass Mutual which I had in my bag. Also deposit slips for Lewis Dunbar & Walter White for Nov. 3, 1936. They show the total amounts of the accounts at that time. Please place them in their pass books.

I presume Mr. Townsend sent my check to Minneapolis, West Hotel as I gave this as the address. I have enough money to get to Mpls but for safety I’ll cash a check here on the San Antonio Bank for $50 tomorrow. Am planning to leave tomorrow night for Mpls with Mr. Gaddis. Mr. Andrews will leave about tomorrow too. The authority for 500 thousand to run until July 1 was given today and I started on grasshopper payroll today. Mr. Townsend also started on that payroll today. He and RA will be ready to leave the latter part of this week & will meet Gaddis and me at Salt Lake City. I’ll return by Arizona, N. Mex., get a Studebaker at San Antonio & return to Mpls by College Sta., Texas, Oklahoma A&M & other state colleges en route to Mpls.

Please send a monthly check of $29.15 to Southland Mortgage Col, Gulf States Bldg., Dallas & mark it 3010 Kirmine St. &c.

Will make out expense accounts & income tax at Mpls.

This work is going to be one big rush with shipments of hundreds of cars of poisoned bait into 24 Western states. There are to be about 110 field men & about 10 in the office at Mpls. The season is short for g-hoppers and we are going to be rushed. Think it best to wait until after the rush is over before moving to Mpls. By that time I can tell more about the permanency of that program for me.

Strong will go to the Houston meetings on the 24th & will drive one of the Studebakers from San Antonio.

Claudelle is to be here soon & hope she gets here before I leave tomorrow.

I tried to find the slides showing C.E. larvae in the skin but I am not sure that they are in the dozen boxes of slides I found. Spent about 2 hours looking tonight & will ask Dr. B to send all of them to Dr. K.S.

The Cushings are leaving here Sat. for Texas East meetings at Houston & will see you at San Antonio. I spent 2 nights with them here. Pauline is over her operation & I ate dinner with them Sunday. Dave cooked chicken & dumplings and did a good job of it. I had dinner with the Bishopps one evening.

With lots of love and looking forward to reaching San Antonio.

Your
Walter.

Don’t worry about Evalyn. I have no idea I’ll stop at any places in the Dakotas except Brookings S.D. & Fargo N.D. at the college. I’ll bet she is short & fat like her ma.

Stationery from the law offices of Lawton and Cunningham, Savannah, GA. I believe Walter and Ina held onto their house in Savannah and rented a place in San Antonio when they moved. Now they’re selling the house in Savannah, as Walter’s new job in grasshopper control won’t be based in either of those cities.

My dear Ina,

Enclosed find Deed already signed and notarized by me. You should go to a notary and with one other witness & execute it in the place indicated for your signature. Be sure to get seal. There is a lady notary on N. Flores about 2 blocks from your house where you and I went. Then mail the deed to Mr. George O’Donnell of above address. The 180 notes @ 37.17 and Debt Deed have been examined and are in good shape according to Mr. O’Donnell & as far as I am able to tell. The insurance check had already been received when I called at the bank this A.M. Having lunch with John Sarah & R.A. tonight. Leaving 8 PM – arriving Wash. at 11:30 AM tomorrow. Check, notes, & Debt Deed will be mailed to you from here, together with statement of adjusted differences on taxes, ins. etc.

With love
Walter.

Pardon the pencil but my fountain pen is on the 4th floor in another coat pocket and this “Y” does not have an elevator.

Your letter was a life saver this morning. I saw a card you had written to Mother Lewis on the 8th, but had not heard from you since I came here. The letter was just fine and I am glad that Walter White is a gold pin citizen. Wish you could sell your office so you could move to San Antonio and be with your husband. Before long I think you will sell and it won’t take long when you get some prospects. I am sure that the house will help sell itself.

Claudelle and I drove to Uvalde Saturday afternoon and returned Sunday PM. Saturday night we went to Thelma’s and spent a while. Mother and Daddy Lewis went with us. We saw Reitha and her boy friend. Thelma Lee was at home after turning down about three dates. She seems to have a good friend who returned from college recently and she saves her dates for him. She is pretty and very attractive. Reitha is growing and is somewhat of a young lady herself.

Next Monday Tuesday & probably Wednesday we will hold the training school at College Station for the new supervisors. RA and Frank are going up there tomorrow. It is possible that Doward may be at Beaumont on a short call notice as Mrs. Doward is expecting a youngster about the 18th. We may have to run the school without Doward.

The office work seems to be pretty well organized, and we have a hand picked personnel. I am real proud of the set up.

Enclosed you will find a signature card for the San Antonio National Bank. Please sign on the second line and return the card to me. I made a deposit today in our joint account and they need your signature before you can write any checks against the account. When your card is signed Mrs. W.E. Dove, I’ll sign and return it to the bank. My address is 1010 Travis Bldg., Personal, and I’d be pleased to hear from you as often as you care to write. I know that you are busy and I won’t expect letters often.

Should you want to write to me at College Station the address is care Mr. Kelvin Doward. He has a box but I do not remember the number. I’ll get it OK.

With love to all three of you and looking forward to seeing you.

Your
Walter

Sunday Night.

My dear Sweetheart,

Yesterday afternoon Mr. Rainwater stayed with me and worked and about four o’clock Mrs. Rainwater came by the office. She typed some things for me which I had overlooked during the rush of the past few days and they were mailed into Washington. A report for the Pest survey bulletin and a news release on screw worms. They had lunch with me at the cafeteria and I went to a movie with them. I took a bath (Sat. night) and went to bed. This morning I found that the Day Light Saving had gone into effect so I’ve been an hour late. Ate breakfast late and a late dinner. Worked from about 11 to 3, saw a parade & then worked from 4:30 to 8:40. Made out my accounts for March and April so that Mitchell can type them tomorrow. I do not get expenses at Atlanta. With the visiting period on the Cushings my accounts amount to $99.

Tomorrow morning Mr. Yeomans reports and after brief instructions during tomorrow and Tuesday he will leave some time Tuesday for San Antonio. Mr. Welker reports tomorrow morning & Bruce comes in the PM. Miss. Claudelle Lewis reported to the Lab at Uvalde on Saturday AM & I sent her an Oath of Office by Air Mail. Had an Air Mail letter from her and I think she has plenty to do.

Mr. Townsend had an operation or expected to, so he will probably be in Washington all week. He has been a hard worker and I’ve depended on him for the office end. On account of payrolls I may not get away as early as I had thought. They have to be signed and only Townsend and I can sign them.

I will have to draw a check on our account tomorrow. I have 40ยข for breakfast tomorrow morning. Made application for an advance for $200 and it should be here by this time. I’ll draw about $10 and by the time it is used, the other should be here. Will get express money orders for convenience.

With lots of love to you and all of our sons,

Your,
Walter.

C&S paper received & will be notarized tomorrow. Am due College Station Saturday and will not leave here until Wednesday PM. Yeomans checked out today. Bruce is here now.

Easter.

With a lot of help from Mr. Townsend I am leaving this noon with figures for Washington. Do not expect to be there more than one or two days but of course one can never tell how long. Mr. Townsend will send my check to Box 22. I drew a check yesterday $25. On renewal of house suggest you phone Mr. Rowland and ask what charges would be. If more, it would be cheaper at 7% & I think we should keep with him one year. If there is renewal expense the C&S for 3 years is OK.

My Dear Sweetheart,

Thanks for the nice letter and the Easter wishes. Just in case I cannot come home tomorrow, I am enclosing the Standard Oil bill and the 13.50 statement from the insurance company at Dallas.

Right now I have 12 names on the SE list who were not recorded in the Secy’s office last year, and I am searching records of Congressional endorsement. We found 9 letters with applications in the different states & I am asking Dr. Bishopp to check for 3 in his office. This seems necessary in getting these men on the job again.

Have been with Mr. Townsend every evening until about 11:30 and then again the first thing in the morning. We are moving toward organization gradually. The coop statements in Wash. were endorsed by BAI & Extension Service and are now up for Secretary’s signature.Had a phone call from Mr. Strong early yesterday AM but he did not mention anything except the men’s names and endorsement. Says it is OK to send R.A. to Texas for arrangements out there.

The labor bill of $25.40 for Mr. Farmer seems reasonable & I think the job was good. I recommend a check to him.

Think we will get another insurance statement from Dallas in about 2 months covering tornado & storm. For some reason the mortgage Co. always carries two policies on the Owenwood place.

Claudelle attached a photo to her application blank so I am sending it home.

With love to all three of you,

Your
Walter

My dear Ina and Boys,

I am at the office early this morning. Mr. Strong was here for a call yesterday PM and he spent only about 20 minutes on the conference. He seemed pleased with the progress on the new set up. We have the District and Assistant District men lined up for the Southeastern states, and their districts outlined on maps. All of these are going to Washington by mail today so that they will be there when Mr. Strong gets back. He is not coming to Savannah on this trip.

April 2, 1936

April 2, 1936

Day before yesterday I spent a couple of hours with Mr. Yeomans & Mr. Gaddis. Yeomans was not worried over a job but thought that Mr. Strong might have something as he had sent word that he wanted to see him here. Mr. Strong told me that Yeomans was too good a man to let go of, and that if I did not want him on the Screw Worm set-up, that he had several places where he could use him. Told him that I thought Yeomans did not want to leave the state. Strong did not think he should be state supervisor or regional supervisor of the Southeastern states on account of lack of experience with screw worms. He thought Yeomans would make a good right hand man for me at San Antonio, Assistant Director. I asked what salary and he saw at least as much as the regional supervisors. These are considered at $3800. Strong thinks that R.A. should be regional director of the Southwest, just as I originally planned it. Strong said it was up to me and that he was not telling me to use Yeomans. I shall see Yeomans today & find out what other places the chief had in mind for him.

It is likely that I’ll get a call to Washington shortly after Mr. Strong gets there on Saturday. The coop statements should be returned by that time and ready for a conference or for sending out to the states. If I can come home, I’ll do so, but I cannot promise it. I have a return ticket. I have the salary check and I think it best for me to get it into Express Money orders. I’ll be on the go so much, and there will be inconveniences in getting checks cashed. In this way it will not be necessary for me to write checks on an account at Savannah.

Tell Walter White I appreciate the surprise that he and Mother had for me. Also, study hard and try to get into the next grade so he can keep up with the cow puncher kids in Texas.

With lots of love,

Your,
Walter.

My dear Ina,

Last night I mailed the salary check of the 15th to the C&S bank for deposit. I had received a notice from the bank. The insurance notice you mentioned is in my bag. I guess I did not tell you about burying it away. It is on the Dallas policy and continues in force as long as we have a value left in it.

I am leaving this PM for Tifton tonight. Will meet Bruce at Elkton Fla. for a farmers meeting at 8 PM tomorrow night. At Gainesville Fla. Friday and Saturday for County agent meeting & meeting of district men of Fla. I should reach Savannah some time Sunday, probably in afternoon. Do not plan a dinner for me at noon.

With lots of love to Walter White, Lewis Dunbar & my wife.

Walter.
